Touching Lives in Bolgatanga

Since 2021, our initiatives have positively impacted the lives of approximately 4,500 children and 500 mothers across the Greater Accra and Northern regions of Ghana, including the communities of Tema and Bolgatanga.

Back-to-School Project, Bolgatanga Preparatory School

Challenge: Access to education in rural Ghana is hindered by various socio-economic factors, including poverty, lack of transportation, scarcity of schools, and inadequate resources. Many parents cannot afford basic education costs, and children are often compelled to work to support their families. Additionally, rural areas face a shortage of qualified teachers and educational materials, affecting the quality of education. This situation hinders the development of rural communities and perpetuates the cycle of poverty.

Solution: In 2022, we established a partnership with Bolgatanga Preparatory School, funding the pur chase of 20 refurbished Dell laptops and accessories (including a modem) to enhance their IT lab. We also donated 300 school bags and food parcels to the students. In Tema, two university students were provided with laptops and dongles to assist them in completing their academic assignments.

Long-Term Goals: Many classrooms at Bolgatanga Preparatory School still require refurbishing, including n ew desks, fans, and whiteboards. HAP aims to raise funds to support these improvements. We also as pire to create greater equity through scholarships and teacher training programs

Touching Lives in Accra & Tema

The Working Mother Initiative, Tema, Greater Accra

Challenge: Women play a crucial role in agriculture and business across rural Ghana, yet less than 1 % own land or have access to startup finance. Women in Ghana face significant challenges in obtaining business loans due to cultural and societal expectations. They are often expected to prioritize traditional caregiver roles, limiting their time and resources to manage a business. Additionally, lenders fr equently perceive women as a higher risk than men, making it harder for them to secure loans. Many women also lack the credit history required to qualify for business loans, creating barriers to economic stability and hindering their potential to grow their businesses.

Solution: In 2022, the Helping Alms Project (HAP) initiated efforts to build relationships with women in the Greater Accra region to understand how we can support their business ventures. We hosted a gathering at the Christian Women’s Village in Ashiaman, where we distributed food parcels and bags of rice while assessing the needs of local women. We also established a relationship with leaders in t he Zanlerigu community in the Nabdam District of Bolgatanga, providing 90 widows and mothers wit h bags of rice and school bags for their children.

LongTerm Goals: Over the next two years, HAP aims to provide microloans to 10 women, enabling them t o start their own businesses and support their families. We are committed to empowering women through financial support and business training, fostering economic independence and enhancing the overall quality of life for their families and communities

Reaching the Community, Tema, Greater Accra

Challenge: Effective community outreach is crucial for fostering development and enhancing the quality of life in rural Ghana. Increasing local awareness about critical issues such as health, education, sanitation, and agriculture is essential. These programs enable the dissemination of vital information that can help reduce poverty, promote economic growth, and improve socio-economic conditions. They also provide opportunities for the community to access valuable resources and services that are typically unavailable.

Solution: In 2021, the Helping Alms Project (HAP) initiated efforts to build strong relationships with local leaders in the Greater Accra region. These partnerships aim to raise awareness about the resources provided by various organizations, facilitating access to healthcare and educational programs.

LongTerm Goals: Through establishing deeper connections with community leaders, HAP aims to develop comprehensive outreach programs. These initiatives will bridge gaps for rural communities, providing access to essential information about basic healthcare and education. Additionally, we aspire to implement sustainable development practices, ensuring lasting benefits for the communities we serve.

Projects Accomplished So Far

2021: "Make Me Smile" Project in Bolgatanga and Beyond

In 2021, Helping Alms Project (HAP) partnered with Spread The Gospel (STG) to launch the "Make Me Smile" initiative in Bolgatanga. Through this project, HAP and STG distributed approximately 400 school bags and provided meals for over 500 young people, engaging the community with games and inspirational talks to foster hope and guidance for the future. In addition, HAP extended this effort to other areas, donating around 800 school bags and food items to children in Tema Community 2 and 60 school bags to children in the Abrem Essiam community in the Central Region of Ghana. This initiative not only offered valuable resources but also united communities in shared joy and purpose.

2023: Community Fun Day in Tema Community 2 and Expanded Outreach Efforts

In 2023, HAP organized a vibrant Community Fun Day in Tema Community 2, attracting approximately 900 children. The event featured food, drinks, and engaging games like musical chairs, dancing competitions, and bottle games, with cash prizes awarded to winners. Each child received a school bag and additional gifts. HAP also extended outreach to the elderly, providing essential food items, such as bags of rice, oil, and soap. The day concluded with a community football match between youth and elders, which was so warmly received that elders requested it become an annual tradition. Beyond this event, HAP forged a partnership with Bolgatanga Preparatory School, funding the purchase of 20 refurbished Dell laptops and accessories. We also donated 300 school bags and food parcels to students, reinforcing our commitment to supporting education and community well-being. In Ashaiman, HAP held a gathering at the Christian Women's Village, distributing food parcels and bags of rice and assessing the needs of local women. Additionally, in Zanlerigu, Nabdam District of Bolgatanga, HAP provided 90 widows and mothers with essential food supplies, including bags of rice, and school bags for their children.

2024: Expanding Tradition and Deepening Community Impact

Honoring the elders' request, HAP once again hosted the community football match in Tema Community 2 in 2024, with participation doubling from the previous year. The day was filled with joy, ending with refreshments and community bonding. During an outreach event, we distributed school bags and food items to approximately 1,200 children across two communities. Additionally, HAP celebrated the elderly through The Easter Love Feast for the Aged, attended by around 130 elders who enjoyed food, drinks, music, and activities. The event concluded with gift distributions, including bags of rice, drinks, and canned foods. Another gathering was held at the Christian Women's Village in Ashaiman, where we provided food parcels and bags of rice to approximately 80 women, reaffirming our commitment to uplifting and supporting communities in need.
